E466 Carboxyméthyl cellulose de sodium, Gomme de cellulose

E466 Carboxyméthyl cellulose de sodium, Gomme de celluloseSodium carboxymethyl cellulose is a thickener, gelling agent, stabilizer and coating agent. Its consumption in excess can cause digestive disorders (diarrhea or, conversely, constipation). In 2015, a study conducted on mice by Georgia State University in Atlanta showed that the consumption of E466, associated with polysorbate 20 (E433), had harmful effects on the intestinal flora and chronic inflammation of the colon. Although these results are alarming, it is not yet possible to say whether they also apply to humans. In particular, the doses of emulsifiers administered to rodents were much higher than those that a human would consume. On the other hand, the consumption of E466 could lead to an increase in the permeability of the intestinal barrier and thus promote chronic inflammatory bowel disease, increased adiposity (metabolic syndrome) and the development of diabetes.
