Potassium carbonate is an acidity regulator, also used as a leavening and stabilizing agent. For example, it can be used to adjust the acidity level in certain infant foods or to make cocoa more fluid. It is also a traditional leavening agent used in some cake recipes. The components of this additive (potassium and carbonate) perform important functions in the body and are found naturally in many foodstuffs. Intakes from the consumption of the additive E501 are insignificant compared to those from the usual diet. No numerical Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) has therefore been set for this additive and its consumption is considered not to be of concern for human health.
